Halls and Stairs

Oral histories from alumni provide us with memories of the crowded halls and busy stairwells within Old Main. These areas served as not only paths, but also meeting places for students and faculty travelling between classes and offices.

Four Corners

One does not read long or listen much to stories of Old Main without encountering references to Four Corners. This was the place in Old Main where the east-west and north-south hallways came together, creating four corners. At “fohre-kohrners,” as the was humorously referred to in the 1937 Index, students waited for each other, read copies of the Vidette, ISNU’s student newspaper, and checked the bulletin boards for goings-on about campus.
